Oxford Bridges High School
November 2021
TRADUCIR ----> ---> ---> ---> ---> ---> ---> --->
Dear Parents,
REMINDER parent/teacher conferences are on November 9th from 4-7pm they will be in person at Oxford Bridges High School. We are located at 1420 Lakeville road, on the 2nd floor of Oxford Middle School. It is easiest to access us if you park in the gym lot and enter through door 12 (right at the stop sign). When you enter the doors, there are stairs to your left, these will take you right up to where we are located. If you are unable to make it please contact either myself or teachers for your student's update.
As of today, we are having significant issues with attendance. There are many students who are missing an excessive amount of school and are currently failing one or more classes. Please be sure your student is coming to school daily and on time. We changed our start time to 8am in hopes it would help students be more timely. However, it seems this is not helping and students are coming in later then ever if at all.
Students who do not attend school each day lose connection to school and what is happening in their classes. This drastically reduces their ability to stay caught up and pass assessments. Also, at some point, I am required to refer students to Oakland County truancy. It is the law for all students to attend school until the age of 18. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to me.
If your student is sick or unable to attend school, please contact me at 248.969.1884 or Shelley McGuire at 248.969.1828.
Thanksgiving break begins November 24th-November 26th! We are looking forward to our annual Thanksgiving feast on November 25th. We cook a turkey and ham as well as bring many dishes to pass. This is an OBHS tradition which our students new and old love to attend. It is a time of togetherness where we can be thankful for the things we have and have fun with one another.
SENIOR INFORMATION:
Oxford Bridges High School has tradition of providing students their cap and gown free of charge for graduation. The gown is returned to us and students keep their caps/tassels. If you would like a gown your student keep, please let me know and I will order one for you. The cost is about $25.
Graduation will be held on Thursday May 26th at 7pm. Students should arrive at 5pm. We will have practice on Tuesday May 24th at 3pm. Should Oxford High School's date get changed to 5/26 our alternate date will be May 25th.
We have many activities planned for our seniors this year. We kicked it off with a senior breakfast on October 7th! We have created a road map to success which has points of celebration about every 45-60 days for those seniors who are on point in both seated and online courses.
Lastly, wishing all of you a great November! Please contact me for any questions or concerns you may have.
Sincerely,
Mrs. V
SOCIAL STUDIES-Mr. Edwards
Civics- This month we are getting into the meat and potatoes of how our federal government works with the focus on developing an understanding of “why do we struggle to pass laws” based on the structure, function, powers, and limits of powers of government. We are also trying to identify current event related topics that tie directly into this topic and prompt. (Ex. the current social spending bill and Senators Manchin and Sinema). In addressing these issues we are both previewing information through short videos and guided notes and then directly connecting this new information to our Constitution so that students can connect the influence of the vision of the Founding Fathers and the actual actions of our government.
Big History- To end October and begin November we are completing our unit 3 assessment
that involves identifying cause and effect relationships of the earliest known metals on civilizations as well as being able to identify through the concept of periodization the shifts in civilizations and humanity through the discovery and evolution of uses of those metals. We will then be starting our unit on the formation of our Earth and Solar system with the intended goal of understanding how to identify and understand multiple causal events.
U.S. History/ELA9- We are winding down our first unit and will be starting our second unit that focuses on the industrial revolution, immigration, and progressivism. For all three topics we try to give students historical context of these topics while also making connections to current conversations and debates around these topics.
Global Studies- We are in our early stages of a new unit to begin November that is titled Tolerance. Within the unit we are exploring the causes and effects of socio-economic inequality with the intention of both better understanding this issue at a national and global scale as well as developing the essential life skills of empathy, and understanding cause and effect relationships.
SCIENCE/MATH-Mr. Cost
Physics-- We will be working with the understanding of Force in our world. How does force cause objects to move? We will extend our knowledge of motion to 2 dimensional including ballistic, and circular motion. We will develop the five equations of motion.
Geometry- We will take our knowledge of lines, angles, logic to create and explore the triangle. We will develop properties of a triangle and then begin to perform transformations on these shapes.
Algebra II- Using our knowledge of different representations of a function, we will extend this knowledge to more sophisticated functions such as absolute value functions and quadratic equations
Personal Finance- We are focused on the finances of daily living. Budgeting for healthy eating. Paying rent. Furnishing an apartment. We will be looking at the sections of a rental lease to understand what is allowable and what is not when renting an apartment.
Astronomy- Finishing our survey of the earth, we will turn our attention to the moon, it’s history, it’s role in the stabilization of the earth. We will examine the founding of NASA and the role it played in getting people into space and to the moon for the first time.
ELA-Mrs. Stern
ELA 10 - As we continue our novel study of John Green’s Paper Towns we will focus on analyzing characters through motives, conflicts, and interactions with other characters. We will work on reflective and creative writing to help us process our character analysis and continue working on our large and small group discussion skills.
ELA 11 - We are well under way with our study of the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Students have analyzed his works to identify his style and techniques and will be starting their own mystery stories very soon. We will work to include mood, tone, unreliable narrators, and all elements of mystery in our writing.
ELA 12 - We are continuing our work with The Great Gatsby and literary lenses as well as our movie and book analysis. We will move into writing argumentative essays as we finish up the novel where students will take a stance on a major conflict in the book.
ELA 9/U.S. History- As we move into the historical period of industrialism, immigration, and progressivism we will use informational texts to create and support claims as well as create our own research questions to find solutions to modern debates on these topics.

SAS
In Student Academic Success class, we began EmpowerU, this is a online, interactive program that assists students in exploring social-emotional skills to help build strategies and skills to handle stress and anxiety the interferes with success.
One in three students struggle with social-emotional barriers that make it difficult for them to focus and learn. EmpowerU partnered with Oxford Bridges High Schools to give these students the dedicated time and support they need to build resilience. We are excited to bring this program to our students.
Career Exploration
Naviance is our career exploration program; it allows students to create their Educational Development Plan, which is a graduation requirement in the state of Michigan. Each student has developed a meaningful short-term goal in Naviance. Next, we will be working on developing their long-term goals and crafting a career plan.
Online
In SAS class, students have the opportunity to utilize online learning to recover credits and/or take classes that are not available in a seated class format. We are working toward most students completing one online class by November 1st. Many of the strategies we are implementing this year involve the focus, motivation and time management it will take to complete their online courses.
Any questions about SAS class, please contact Michelle Times or Nicole Flores, see contact information above.
